This group of specimens were seized in an operation against illegal trade.

The team of experts of Terra Natura Benidorm has managed to reproduce a chick of Loris rainbow (Trichoglossus haematodus) in the facilities of this park, from which biodiversity conservation is encouraged. This is the first time we get this species to reproduce here.

The group has 9 specimens since march and it is now when the species has reproduced. The group of specimens arrived at our park from a centre of unrecoverable fauna of Toledo. They were saved in a seizure operation carried out by the police to prevent illegal trafficking of species.

Loris chick with the rest of its group can be seen by visitors in the area of Asia, where they share space with specimens of flying foxes. Terra Natura Benidorm experts warn of the serious consequences of illegal trafficking of species in their conservation. The latest data suggest that there are more than 160,000 seizures of copies of 7,000 species in 121 countries, which show the worrying rise that is taking place in the illegal trade of species, both living and dead.

Spain is considered a strategic point in the illegal trafficking of protected species, appearing in the ranking of countries with the highest confiscation of leopard and reptile skins. The Iberian Peninsula also channels an important part of the volume of illegal trade of macaws and parrots from Central America, Africa and Oceania.

Preventive social awareness campaigns, market control and tightening of controls by the CITES Administration and customs are key to prevent the demand of protected species. It is estimated that, at the moment, there are more than 10,000 species of birds on the planet, species whose conservation is threatened by the effects made by humans.

Biodiversity is in serious danger. We need to be aware of our key role in natural balance and that our impact alters life on the planet. the solution implies that both consumers, merchants and final distributors assume our responsibility in this chain.
