A dentist performs an odontoplasty on one of the donkeys at Terra Natura Benidorm

hace 2 years

Equine dentist Sergio Soler came to Terra Natura Benidorm this morning to perform an oral check-up on two of the park’s donkeys, named Peque and Pinta. After examining both animals, the dentist detected a series of oral problems for which it was necessary to apply a specific treatment.

Specifically, it has been detected that Pinta has a scissor bite, which prevents him from eating normally. This tendency has to be corrected gradually to try to make the chewing movement occur in a normal way. The dentist will check her again in August this year to see if the bite has been corrected.

In Peque’s case, it was discovered that she had enamel tips and was experiencing dental overgrowth. To correct this overgrowth, it was necessary to apply an odontoplasty, a technique that consists of remodelling the coronal part of the tooth. Another odontoplasty was also performed on Pinta, who was suffering from the same problem.

The donkey keeper noticed a few days ago that Pinta was not eating like before, and had even lost weight. In addition, she was making repetitive movements of her jaw when she was not eating. All this made the veterinary team suspect that this animal might have some kind of oral problem.

Given this suspicion, it was decided to contact the equine dentist Sergio Soler, who has been collaborating with the park in the treatment and dental control of donkeys and elephants since 2017. During the visit of this specialist, an oral examination was also carried out on the donkey, called Peque, to confirm the oral health status of both equines.
