The nature and animal park Terra Natura Benidorm have incorporated a new Goeldi titi (Callimico goeldii), a species that is in a vulnerable conservation status according to the IUCN and that is included in Annex I of CITES, therefore its international commercialization is totally prohibited. The new male will make a couple with a female who lives in the park since 2015, who lost her partner a few months ago.

Being a social species, it is convenient that these animals share their habitat to guarantee their correct adaptation to the environment and their well-being. The team of veterinarians hopes that with the arrival of the new male, they can reproduce within a while.

The male Goeldi titi is two years old, this species stands out for having a completely black coat, although there are some which have dark brown hair. Measures 9 centimetres tall and has a 12-centimetre tail. Visitors will be able to meet this specimen in its facility located in the area of America.

This Goeldi marmoset has been transferred from the Menagerie du Jardin des Plantes zoo, in Paris. Before it arrives, tests were carried out to confirm he has good health. Among these tests, a stool examination to detect possible parasites and several blood tests were made.

At the moment, the female marmoset gets on very well with the male, they usually look for each other to be together along the day. The females usually give birth to one baby which they carry during the first two weeks, later the care is transferred to the father, who is in charge of raising it. From the fourth week of life, this responsibility falls on the group that shares the parenting process.

When they are three months old, these marmosets emancipate from their parents. Goeldi’s marmosets have a wide range of vocalizations and social signs. Their populations are threatened due to the loss of their natural habitat and hunting, as there is a demand for these animals as pets in the black market.

Terra Natura Benidorm also has other species of marmosets like the brush marmoset, the cotton-headed marmoset, the golden-headed marmoset and the pygmy marmoset.
