Arrives to Terra Natura Benidorm one of the world’s largest frog species

hace 8 years

The Terra Natura Benidorm volcano is hosting a new frog specimen from this week. It is a male bull frog (Pyxicephalus adspersus), the biggest frog in the world. From this week, the visitors who come to the park can meet this amphibian, originally from Africa, who comes from the zoo in Madrid and has been baptized with the name of Jabba.
As the zookeepers have explained, the frog is 4 years old and its longevity in captivity can reach up to 10 years. The largest specimens of this frog weigh 1 kg, the size of Jabba is 700 grams, a considerable size considering that the common frogs weigh about 100 grams.
This species is characterized by cannibalism, only a few reach adulthood because sometimes they eat themselves. They usually eat insects, reptiles or small rodents. During the summer, they hide under ground so they can refuge from the heat, a process known as aestivation, and remain there for about 3 months to avoid dehydration. The frogs come out with the arrival of autumn rains.
