Four birds of prey arrive to Terra Natura from the Recovery Centre of Seville
hace 7 years
We received four raptors from the Recovery Centre of Seville. In particular, a crow (Corvus corax), a buzzard (Buteo buteo), a kite (Milvus milvus) and a common tawny owl (Strix aluco) and from now on, they will live with the others raptors. With this collaboration the park helps the Sevillian center to decongest its facilities and give shelter to these birds to continue with their rehabilitation in their new home.
It´s the first time we cooperate with this centre in Seville, although similar actions have been carried out with other wildlife recovery centres such as Toledo and Buitrago. The crow called Morty is a male, weights around 800 grams and has a wingspan of 1.50 metres, it is the first crow that the zoo receives. The buzzard named Sheldon, weights 700 grams and has a wingspan of 104 centimetres.
The real kite, called Dorado weight 700 grams and has a wingspan of 107 centimetres. Finally, the tawny owl is the smallest, Rico weights 400 grams and has a wingspan of 90 centimeters. This cooperation helps to improve the conservation of raptors in Spain, which are in danger of extinction. In fact, the royal kite is especially threatened. These birds will be part of the social awareness programme developed by the park.
Those birds were in the recovery centre to be treated after suffering an accident. In the case of the crow, it was transferred because it was in inappropriate conditions by his owner so it was confiscated by the authorities. Recovery centres act like hospitals, where animals are treated for their illness to be released in the wild when they can return to fend for themselves.
When those birds can´t return to the wild, the best place for them is the zoo, where they have the necessary conditions for each species, otherwise, these birds wouldn´t survive their predators. The recovery centres contact AIZA, and this association derives the request from the associated members who have the requirements to receive the animals.
Our zookeepers are positive about these four raptors adaptation. In fact, the Crow Morty has been affectionate, gentle and very sociable and has created a special bond with his keeper. Rico and the owls that already lived in the park have become inseparable.
