Ice lollies with fruit, vegetables, meat or fish: our recipe for keeping the animal kingdom cool
hace 7 monthsAt Terra Natura Benidorm, we are once again bringing back our summer tradition of preparing ice treats for the animals in our care. These frozen blocks, made with fruit, vegetables, meat or fish depending on each species’ dietary needs, are much more than just a way to beat the heat. They form part of our environmental enrichment programme, combining nutrition, stimulation and wellbeing for the wide variety of species that live in the park.
Crafted by our zookeepers using fresh, varied ingredients tailored to each animal, the ice lollies provide both refreshment and entertainment. Big cats such as tigers, jaguars and clouded leopards relish meaty blocks, while primates like tamarins, gibbons and siamangs enjoy colourful combinations of fruit, vegetables, water and yoghurt. Herbivores, including elephants and rhinoceroses, cool down with icy fruit and vegetable mixes, and smaller mammals, rodents, otters and even tortoises also find these frozen creations a fun and nutritious way to feed.
Beyond their cooling effect, the ice blocks are designed to spark curiosity and encourage natural behaviours. To reach the food inside, animals must lick, bite or manipulate the ice, extending the time spent foraging and handling their meal – just as they would in the wild. For predators, the activity encourages behaviours such as biting, tearing or ‘hunting’ the contents, while for frugivores and herbivores it promotes careful selection and handling of food.
These icy enrichments also contribute to the animals’ physical wellbeing. Handling the blocks requires effort and coordination, helping to stimulate muscles and maintain good physical condition. The cooling effect of the ice aids thermoregulation during the hottest days of summer, reducing the risk of heat stress. At the same time, it adds variety to the daily diet and presents it in a more engaging way, enriching the animals’ sensory experiences.
At Terra Natura Benidorm, we see these ice lollies not as a mere summer treat, but as a valuable tool for care. They combine physical and mental stimulation with nutritional and emotional benefits, strengthening our commitment to animal welfare. By providing an environment that is stimulating, safe and adapted to the specific needs of each species, we ensure their wellbeing throughout the hottest months of the year.
