Joining World Wetlands Day through educational and outreach initiatives

hace 2 months

On the occasion of World Wetlands Day, celebrated every 2nd of February, Terra Natura Benidorm is strengthening its commitment to the conservation of these essential ecosystems through an educational and outreach programme led by its Education Department. This initiative highlights the importance of wetlands as key spaces for biodiversity, human well-being and the fight against climate change.

As part of this special programme, on 31st of January and 1st of February, visitors will be able to take part throughout the day in a species sighting and identification game focused on wetland-related wildlife. This educational activity will offer the opportunity to discover the biodiversity associated with these ecosystems, including birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects and plant species found at Terra Natura Benidorm and in the surrounding natural environment.

In addition, during the afternoons of both days, a round-table discussion on wetland conservation will be held, moderated by an environmental educator. The session will help participants to better understand the main scientific and environmental aspects linked to the protection of wetlands and the role they play in maintaining ecosystem balance.

Alongside these activities, as part of World Wetlands Day, Terra Natura Benidorm’s Education team will take part on 2nd of February in the international webinar ‘Wetlands for Life’, organised by the EAZA campaign team. The webinar aims to explore the challenges and opportunities related to wetland conservation and to share good practice at a European level.

Complementing these actions, the park will share an educational video filmed in 2025 under the message ‘Protecting wetlands is protecting life’, which highlights the vital importance of these ecosystems. This communication will also be supported by an image of the Golfete de Cuare, a Wildlife Refuge and the first Ramsar Site declared in Venezuela in 1988, kindly provided by Ramsar to EAZA members for exclusive use during this commemoration.

Wetlands are among the most damaged and threatened ecosystems on the planet, despite their fundamental role as refuges for countless species and their contribution to water supply, climate regulation and environmental resilience. For this reason, the 2026–2027 conservation campaign of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria is dedicated to these natural spaces under the slogan ‘Wetlands for Life’, an initiative that Terra Natura Benidorm is actively supporting.

World Wetlands Day marks the signing of the Ramsar Convention in 1971, an international agreement that promotes the protection and sustainable use of wetlands worldwide. In this context, Terra Natura Benidorm aligns its actions with the objectives of the European campaign, which already has more than one hundred participating institutions, further strengthening its commitment to the conservation of natural heritage.

Through this programme, Terra Natura Benidorm reaffirms its commitment to environmental education as a key tool for wetland conservation and for fostering a more informed and responsible society in the protection of the natural environment.
