Our team have successfully helped a flamingo who suffered from a digestive disease

hace 5 years

Despite the current situation of confinement, veterinary care continues normally at Terra Natura Benidorm, guaranteeing the health and well-being of all the animals. On this occasion, they had to treat a digestive infection in one of the flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus).

The zookeepers saw a few days ago that the animal had a lack of appetite and difficulty when moving. When Flamingos are sick, they tend to leave the rest of the group, which putted the keepers in alert.

An examination was done to the flamingo to check its health and found out it was underweight and showed a certain state of apathy. With these symptoms, a treatment of vitamin, anti-inflammatory and antibiotic supplements have been administered orally to treat the possible infection of the digestive system.

The zookeepers of Terra Natura Benidorm hope that after the treatment the animal will fully recover and re-join the rest of the group. Currently, there are six flamingos who live with the other 350 birds in the aviary.

Flamingos have a characteristic pink colour in their plumage which happens because they eat thousands of small crustaceans of that colour so the pigment is deposited in their skin, legs and plumage. The shape of its beak forces it to dip its head upside down, an action that facilitates feeding. In addition, it has folds in this area of the body that act as a filter to separate food from water and sand.
