Our zoo keepers rescues a baby chital rejected by its mother at birth

hace 3 years

Our team of veterinarians and zoo keepers has rescued a baby chital (Axis,Axis) rejected by its mother as soon as it was born. The group of experts has activated the manual feeding protocol to guarantee the survival of this baby, because without bottle-fed it would die.

After detecting that the baby was alone in the Asian prairie and no female in the herd was in charge of its feeding and care, the zoo keepers had to start the feeding process using bottles, 200 millilitres of milk a day.

When they reach one month of life, they will start to eat forage and specific feed for the weaning phase, so their diet will be gradually changing until they only feed on solid products. From the 6th or 8th week of life, they stop having milk to focus exclusively on vegetables, feed and forage.

The rejection of the baby by the mother can be due to different reasons. One of them is that the mother is a first-timer and does not know how to act with the new born, other times, the

mother may be too weak and doesn´t feel strong enough to take care of it or it can be because the baby is born with some problem or extreme weakness, which makes the mother instinctively reject it if she considers that It has no chance of surviving naturally.

Until now, the baby has been moved from the rest of the group of chitals to a room equipped and heated so that the little chital has the maximum degree of well-being. He will initially stay indoors during the day to get used to the smell of his fellows, and in a couple of weeks he will spend the night there as well. When it adapts to the group, it will be moved permanently with the rest of the group.

Currently, the park has 34 chitals and are distributed in different herd based on age and sex. On the other hand, this species is characterized by making some vocalizations, in addition to the typical bellow of the mating season produced by males. They have a kind of bark that is used in alarm situations or when they perceive an unusual element in their environment.
