Joining the international ‘Reverse the Red’ movement

Terra Natura Benidorm is joining the international Reverse the Red movement and has made a special public activity taking place this weekend in the park. The initiative aims to raise awareness of the situation facing endangered species and to show how coordinated action can help reverse their decline. It highlights active conservation and the key role played by conservation centres, environmental education and public engagement in protecting biodiversity.

During the activity, visitors will be able to take a guided tour through the park accompanied by the education team and animal keepers, who will explain first-hand the threats faced by some of the most vulnerable species, as well as the daily work carried out to ensure their welfare and conservation. The experience will offer real-life conservation examples and help visitors understand how scientific programmes, responsible management and social awareness contribute to improving the status of threatened species.

Terra Natura Benidorm’s commitment to Reverse the Red reflects a shift in the approach to conservation, moving from raising alarms to taking action. This international movement, led by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), promotes concrete and sustained measures to reduce the number of species on the Red List and to support the recovery of those currently at risk.

The results of such strategies are already evident in iconic species. For example, the population of Bengal tigers has increased to nearly 3,600 individuals in the wild in India, while the Indian rhinoceros now exceeds 4,000 individuals in India and Nepal, after once being on the brink of extinction. These achievements are the result of decades of coordinated conservation efforts, habitat protection and the fight against poaching.

Reverse the Red Day, celebrated since 2019, was created to raise awareness of the growing extinction risk faced by thousands of species, while also highlighting the progress made through breeding programmes, conservation initiatives, scientific research, ecosystem restoration and environmental education. Every species that succeeds in reducing its level of threat is proof that conservation works when it is translated into real action.

Through this activity, Terra Natura Benidorm reaffirms its commitment to biodiversity conservation and environmental awareness, bringing the public closer to the reality of endangered species and the active role society can play in their protection. Activity schedules and meeting points are available on our official website.
