The aviary grows with the birth of two tero chicks

hace 3 years

The animals that live in the aviary of Terra Natura has increased thanks to the birth of two new tero chicks (Vanellus chilensis), originally from the American continent. This is the third time that this bird has babies’ birds since the species arrived at our park.

At present, six birds of this species live in the aviary, which is not particularly threatened at the conservation level. The chicks will be cared by their parents until they reach the first month of life. After that, both chicks will remain near the nest while the parents watch over them in case of any threats.

If any danger situation happens, one of the parents will stay with the chicks while the other one confronts the intruder, emitting a very shrill cry. In other situations, this bird may pretend that it is incubating eggs to mislead the attacker, it may pretend to be injured, or they can attack fiercely by making low-flying passes to drive them away.

Among the popular beliefs around the teros birds is the prediction of the rain through its particular song, to the point of having the nickname of “The loud-mouthed sentinel.” It is believed that if these birds sing in one place it is because its nest and eggs are on the other side, and this habit is carried out to distract possible predators.

The reproduction of this birds in Terra Natura Benidorm has been possible thanks to the environmental conditions and the quality of the facility that welcomes them which recreates the elements of their natural environment. In addition to shrubby areas and trees, the facility also has specific land so they can make their nests to breed. The aviary has an area of more than 4,000 square metres where more than 40 species live, 6 of them in danger of extinction.

This bird, as a curiosity, develops a cooperative breeding behaviour, where a third bird joins the couple for breeding. This third bird will be in charge of helping in the surveillance and care of the nest, favouring their survival. On the other hand, during the egg-laying phase they can be very aggressive and vigilant.

When night comes, the mother takes care of her chicks under her wings and they will be cared until the learn how to fly.
