The family of arrow poison frogs grows with five new specimens
hace 7 yearsThe animals and nature park, Terra Natura Benidorm, continues to grow with the birth of five frogs. These are poison arrow frogs (Dendrobates leucomelas), a species of toxic frog native to South America, considered one of the most dangerous frogs in the world.
This birth means that the family of arrow frogs increases to 11, two have already fully developed and three remain tadpoles.
These amphibians can live between 8 and 15 years. The largest specimens grow up to 5 centimeters in length, despite the fact that the average remains at 2.5 centimeters. The weight of an adult specimen is around 5 grams and is characterized by its yellow and black color.
The reproduction period of this species is from May to October. The frogs perform several courtships where the male makes songs to attract the female, then they deposit the eggs in the bromeliads leaves. The laying of each female has between three and five eggs. The development of the eggs starts the first two weeks transforming into tadpoles. The metamorphosis continues 60 days, with the appearance of the back legs. One week later, the front limbs appear and lose the tail to become practically terrestrial.
This species is poisonous; The frog does not inject the poison, but its skin is covered with toxic substances to poison its predators when it is attacked. In addition, this frog presents intense colors to alert that they are toxic and deadly.
The name of these frogs comes from the tradition of the natives who lived in South America who used them to hunt by impregnating the tips of their arrows with this poison, so they were more effectiveness.
