Two ocelots born in Terra Natura Benidorm will create reproductive groups of the species in France
hace 5 yearsTwo young ocelots (Leopardus pardalis) have been transferred from Terra Natura Benidorm to the French zoos of Parc Animalier des Pyrenees and the Bassin d’Arcachon Zoo with the aim of making two new reproductive groups of this species, which is in a vulnerable state and it is protected by the international agreement for the traffic of species CITES I. With the creation of both reproductive groups it is intended to enhance the conservation of these felines and bring knowledge about them to society.
Enzo and Zoe were born in November 2018. After both offspring have completely emancipated from the mother, named Selha, they have proceeded to transfer within the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP). The couple, which are the breeding pair, live in Terra Natura Benidorm.
Terra Natura has welcomed the birth of six ocelots since the first breeding pair was form, integrated by Selha and the male Ah-mun, in 2005. The adaptation of these specimens to the environment and the appropriate characteristics of the facilities have enabled the reproduction of this species since it arrived, which is a sign of welfare of the species.
The ocelot is the third feline in size that lives in South American after other animals such as the puma or jaguar. This animal, considered one of the shyest in the world, is usually hidden among the vegetation of the jungle and is launched towards its prey from the trees taking advantage of the darkness of the night. Its peculiar name comes from the ocelos, the circular marks of its skin.
The zoological parks have the mission of promoting the education, reproduction and investigation of the species acting as genetic reservoirs. The activity of these spaces follows the lines marked by AIZA and EAZA focused on the conservation and animal welfare.
