We activate the prevention protocol for animals against the heat wave
hace 3 yearsFrom Terra Natura Benidorm we have activated the prevention protocol so that the animals can combat the high temperatures that the heat wave is going to leave during these days. The measures adopted guarantee the welfare of the animals and prevent possible heat strokes in species that are especially sensitive to high temperatures.
We have reinforced the measures by increasing the watering in the pastures and animal facilities. In the case of species like nebulous panthers or nilgos, sprinklers have been incorporated to cool the enclosure. Also, birds of prey receive extra preventive showers to deal with high temperatures.
We have also modified the diet of the animals, like every summer, favouring the supply of frozen fruit, meat or fish poles and refrigerated foods. In this way, animals such as Asian lions, Bengal tigers, otters, dholes, porcupines, saimiris or jaguars will receive their frozen food these days of heat wave to facilitate the regulation of their temperature.
Elephants, rhinos and primates will be able to taste the frozen food, which is made every day with fruits like apple, pineapple or watermelon, mixed with corn, barley and wheat cereals to provide more nutrients to these frozen desserts. When we provide frozen food to the animals, they cool down and the environmental enrichment is enhanced, as they discover new textures and sensations.
High temperatures leave the animals with less appetite, so we offer food with high nutritional value depending on each species and its specific needs. In the case of macaws and toucans, the diet is enriched with more bananas, while vitamins are given to Japanese cranes and flamingos.
