We build insects houses to encourage biodiversity in their environment

hace 8 years

Terra Natura Benidorm has created insects houses to put them in different points of the park to encourage local biodiversity and to be awareness about the need to protect ecosystems. The elaborated boxes are in spaces dedicated to the free growth of native fauna and flora. The action is part of a workshop for children that has been organized to celebrate the International Day of Biodiversity which was today.
The initiative is part of the Let It Grow campaign promoted by the Botanic Gardens International Consortium, the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the Ecsite (European Network of Museums and Science Centers). The campaign wants to promote knowledge of biodiversity and establish spaces to help protect native species.
The educators of the park have guided this activity, supervised by the expert biologist Elisa Gozalbes, responsible of the park conservation. A flora and fauna inventory has been created in one of the zones of the park and 200 square meters are to encourage the growth of native species. The action is in line with the objectives of Terra Natura Benidorm that defends the promotion of the conservation of endangered populations and their ecosystems.
The conservation of biodiversity is essential to maintain the planet’s balance. Due to the development of society, native species are exposed to big pressure, as their habitats are transformed and changes are introduced in agriculture and other non-endemic species. The lost of species produced by these changes generates important problems not only in natural ecosystems, but also in urban environments.
