We end the year with the arrival of a marabou for the first time
hace 11 monthsAt Terra Natura Benidorm we have culminated this year with the introduction for the first time of a marabou (Leptoptilos crumenifer) in its facilities. This is a CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) listed species of Leptoptilos crumenifer.
The bird that has arrived is called Afro, in allusion to its African origin, and comes from Zoomarine, located in the Portuguese Algarve. On arrival at Terra Natura Benidorm, it has undergone a complete health examination, in which a biochemical analysis and haemogram were carried out. In addition to the usual internal and external deworming, a thorough examination was also carried out to check his physical and mental state.
The bird’s plumage and flight, eyes, beak, hearing, legs and coordination of movements were also checked. This species is a heavy bird that can weigh up to seven kilos and stand up to 1.35 metres tall. Afro is nine years old and weighs about six kilos. This species of African bird is particularly striking for its appearance and habits.
Its arrival is intended to complete and improve the educational and informative demonstration of birds of prey that is organised in the park. Since he has been at Terra Natura Benidorm, Afro has become familiar with his new space and has learned the training routines to participate in the educational demonstration.
