We join in the European jaguar programme with the transfer of a specimen to France
hace 5 yearsTerra Natura Benidorm joins in the European Jaguar (Panthera onca) Endangered Species Programme (EEP), developed by EAZA, with the transfer of one of the specimens that lives in the park to Le Parc des Félins zoo, located in Nesles, France. The initiative aims to guarantee the genetic variability of this species avoiding inbreeding and reinforce the wild populations through reintroduction programmes.
This melanic jaguar, named Teo, was born in this park in December 2018. They are a group of five, his parents Socorro and Grecia, his two sisters and Teo. The decrease in jaguar populations in the wild makes it a vulnerable species and is also included in Annex IA of CITES, which is the one with the highest risk.
Jaguars are considered the largest cats in America and third in size in the world, after the tiger and the lion. The experience of the Terra Natura Benidorm team in the care of big cats has allowed several births of this species since 2007, until the last time in 2018 with the birth of Teo.
This park, dedicated to conservation, promotes the education, reproduction and research of the species through its activity, acting as a genetic reservoir. This type of programme allows the conservation of biodiversity through the genetic viability of the species.
