We join the coalition ‘United for #Biodiversity’ of the European Commission to raise awareness about the protection of biodiversity
hace 4 yearsAt Terra Natura Benidorm we have joined the coalition ‘United for #Biodiversity’ organised by the European Commission. This movement started as a global campaign where the target is to join strength between institutions and organizations from different countries to demand the world leaders’ urgent measures to solve the crisis that nature suffers and to raise awareness about the need to protect biodiversity.
Through this initiative, the European Commission recognises the important role of zoos and aquariums in the preservation of biodiversity. The coalition ‘United for #Biodiversity’ was launched with the celebration of the World Wildlife Day to raise awareness about the importance of preserving biodiversity.
The need to fight for the preservation of the natural world has never been clearer and more urgent than now. This movement aims to promote awareness of the crisis that the planet, its wildlife and its flora are suffering. Terra Natura Benidorm is a member of the AIZA (Iberian Association of Zoos and Aquariums), a non-profit organization that works to promote conservation, education, awareness and dissemination, as well as animal welfare.
The ‘United for #Biodiversity’ initiative makes a call to zoos, national parks, aquariums, botanical gardens, science and natural history museums and research centres to join forces and raise the voice about the pressure that is being seen submitted to nature, coinciding with the development of the First World Summit on Biodiversity, which will take place tomorrow and is organised by the United Nations.
In relation to the current context, the European Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, said that “The biodiversity crisis is an important manifestation of climate change. Ensuring the protection and restoration of biodiversity will not only preserve the natural environment for future generations, but will also help combat climate change and avoid negative consequences for our food, health and economy. It is urgent that we take action, otherwise, we will only be able to contemplate nature in zoos and botanical gardens, which would be a failure for all humanity”.
Those responsible for the movement hope that the World Summit on Biodiversity will ease the way for the next meeting, which will be the 15th Conference of the Parties (CoP 15), in which the 2021 Convention on Biological Diversity will be addressed.
