Terra Natura Benidorm has participated in the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA) 2025 Educational Conference, an event that brought together more than 150 professionals from zoos and aquariums from all over Europe. Saray Rubio, biologist and team leader of educators of the park, attended this biennial meeting, which took place from 17st to 21st March at Chester Zoo, UK.
Under the theme ‘Zoo educators creating a global impact on conservation’, the conference addressed the importance of environmental education in the preservation of biodiversity. During the sessions, participants shared experiences and strategies to improve the impact of educational programmes on conservation. Among the topics discussed, the focus was on leadership development in environmental education, human well-being linked to the connection with nature, and the promotion of diverse voices in conservation.
The head of Terra Natura Benidorm participated in presentations and round tables dedicated to the application of digital tools in environmental communication and the impact of education on mental health, especially in children and young people. The exploration of new methods has been one of the pillars of the conference, with the presentation of projects such as educational games to raise awareness of wildlife protection, initiatives for the construction of insect hotels, and creative activities such as the manufacture of seed bombs or musical projects aimed at raising awareness of marine conservation.
During the event, conservation expert Judy Mann-Lang highlighted the essential role of zoos, aquariums, and botanical gardens as centres for environmental education and stressed the need to strengthen collaboration between educators and to integrate education into national biodiversity strategies. His intervention reinforced the role that these spaces play in raising awareness and teaching future generations about sustainability.
Terra Natura Benidorm’s participation in this forum reinforces our commitment to education and conservation, supporting programmes that bring biodiversity closer to the public and promote awareness of the importance of protecting the natural environment.
