We welcome to the aviary a couple of paujis, a species in danger of extinction

hace 4 years

A couple of paujis (Pauxi pauxi) has joined the aviary of Terra Natura to expand the biological sample, a space focused in the conservation and care of birds to favour the dissemination of the knowledge about these animals. This species is in danger of extinction according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is listed as CITES III.

Both birds were born in 2020 and they will meet the other pauji that lives in the aviary already. This species arrived at Terra Natura Benidorm in 2005. Veterinarians have taken samples of these birds in order to determine their sex accurately.

To favour the adaptation process, the two birds have spent a few days in a controlled space next to their new home so the acclimatization to the new environment was progressive, and now the two paujis fly free around the aviary and show a correct adaptation which is set according to the characteristic ecosystems of the South American jungle, where 220 animals of 28 species live.

As soon as they arrived at the park, our team of veterinarians carried out a visual inspection of the birds and everything was correct. As a curiosity, this species has a cap on the beak as an ornament that plays an important role in the courtship stage.

They usually make very loud vocalizations thanks to air chambers that they have in their windpipe, which allows them to increase the volume of their voice. The main threats that affect their conservation in the wild are hunting and the disappearance of their habitat.
