Millions of people visit zoos every year,<\/span>\u00a0so<\/span>\u00a0our informative mission is crucial.\u00a0<\/span>By its own commitment and sense of responsibility,\u00a0<\/span>Terra Natura endorses the first of the Aichi<\/span>\u00a0Biodiversity\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>arget<\/span>s<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\"for 2020, at the latest, people will be aware of the value of biological diversity and the steps they can follow for conservation and sustainable use.\"<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Environmental enrichment <\/h3>\n

To promote animal welfare,\u00a0<\/span>both\u00a0<\/span>environmental\u00a0<\/span>factors<\/span>\u00a0(plant design, water supply<\/span>, habitat<\/span>) and animal-centric\u00a0<\/span>factors\u00a0<\/span>(behavior, appearance, health and vital parameters) are studied. Behavioral alterations serve to assess well-being<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>prevent\u00a0<\/span>or<\/span>\u00a0correct behaviors that are seldom observed in nature (<\/span>stereotyping,\u00a0<\/span>apathy).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Environmental enrichment enhances natural behaviors and reduces the presence of\u00a0<\/span>stereotypes<\/span>\u00a0through a dynamic process. A varied diet\u00a0<\/span>hidden<\/span>\u00a0in different\u00a0<\/span>locations<\/span>\u00a0prevents the onset of diseases and routine<\/span>s<\/span>;\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span>natural habitat design<\/span>\u00a0(substrates, vegetation,\u00a0<\/span>lairs<\/span>, etc.) stimulates the exploratory capacity;\u00a0<\/span>concern for what is near the animal habitat<\/span>\u00a0reduces stress levels; the presence of\u00a0<\/span>animal toys as well as<\/span>\u00a0sound<\/span>s<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>smell<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>taste<\/span>s\u00a0<\/span>heighten the attention and curiosity of<\/span>\u00a0the animals.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Veterinary medicine <\/h3>\n

Terra Natura's animals receive attention from a specialized team of caregivers, biologists and veterinarians 365 days a year. The work of veterinarians\u00a0<\/span>oversees their sanitation and health<\/span>\u00a0of animals<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>ir\u00a0<\/span>nutritional and reproductive control<\/span>, and the protocols for animal care.\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>hey have a\u00a0<\/span>well-equipped\u00a0<\/span>clinic\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of illnesses<\/span>. The clinic has areas for\u00a0<\/span>hospitalization<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>neonatal\u00a0<\/span>care<\/span>, plus a\u00a0<\/span>quarantine<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>where they check\u00a0<\/span>newly-arrived\u00a0<\/span>animals<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The management of the\u00a0<\/span>zoo<\/span>\u00a0collection\u00a0<\/span>falls<\/span>\u00a0to the\u00a0<\/span>conservation<\/span>\u00a0biologist, who also\u00a0<\/span>oversees\u00a0<\/span>compliance\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0legislation,\u00a0<\/span>facilities design, environmental enrichment programs,\u00a0<\/span>cooperation with government administrations (Environment, PRONE, CITES, etc.)<\/span>, collaboration with\u00a0<\/span>other environmental institutions (AIZA, EAZA, ZIMS, etc.)<\/span>, and participation\u00a0<\/span>in breeding and conservation strategies for endangered Species (EEPs and SBs).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A varied diet is essential for the maintenance of animal welfare and for the prevention of disease and apathy. The veterinary team is in charge of establishing and implementing animal diets through careful selection of the most suitable foods for each species and individual animal, not only to cover their nutritional needs but to promote their natural behaviors. Terra Natura works with local food suppliers. <\/p>\n

The \"Animal Kitchen\" team receives food and stores it in cold chambers for daily use. They start their day early in order to prepare and distribute meals throughout the park before caregivers begin their daily routines. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
