We set up shelter boxes to help wild bat populations
hace 3 yearsFrom the Department of Conservation of Terra Natura Benidorm, we have placed refuge boxes in different parts of the park to provide shelter for the wild bats that are in the area and thus help the conservation of this species. In total, six boxes will be placed on walls, posts and tree trunks at a certain height so they can be occupied by these animals.
The shelters are made of wood with the shape of flat and narrow boxes, which simulate the fissures or cracks that usually trees have. These boxes are for warm seasons because in the hibernation season bat seeks for more isolated territories climatologically. Wild bats in the area will be able to use these artisanal shelters as a space to breed.
The initiative has a double target, on the one hand, it seeks to spread the importance of conserving the natural habitats of these species that provide both benefits to natural ecosystems and control pests. On the other hand, it is intended to raise awareness about the role that bats play in the balance of ecosystems, thus ending the bad and unjustified reputation they have.
Among the most serious conservation problems that wild bat populations must endure are the loss of their habitat, due to landscape transformations and overexploitation of forest masses, and the use of agricultural pesticides that reduce the number of prey and cause poisonings by ingestion of contaminated insects. In Spain there are 27 different species of bats.
Bats provide numerous benefits, they act as pollinators by spreading the seeds of flowers, which allows the reproduction of plants and the natural conservation of ecosystems. Likewise, its diet is based on insects like mosquito moths, which contributes to controlling the evolution of this insect, which is a vector that transmits many diseases such as malaria, among others.
