A new Goeldi’s marmoset arrives at Terra Natura Benidorm to boost the conservation of the species

hace 2 years

At Terra Natura Benidorm we have incorporate a female Goeldi’s marmoset (Callimico goeldii) to see if she matches with the male who arrived at the park from France in 2021. This species is in a critical state of conservation and is included in CITES, its traffic is totally prohibited, except with administrative authorisation.

This female marmoset has been transferred from the Neuwied Zoo in Germany.

It is a species that is part of the EEP (European endangered programme). The coordinator of the European programme has recommended the transfer of this female to complete the breeding pair of marmosets in Benidorm with the aim of achieving the reproduction of this vulnerable species.

The main threat to their conservation is the degradation of their habitat, as less than half of the forests where they live are unprotected and seriously threatened by deforestation. Road construction projects, massive logging, human population expansion and the practice of hunting for the illegal trade in protected animals are other threats to primate populations.

The Goeldi’s marmoset (Callimico goeldii) is a primate native to the non-flooded rainforests of western Brazil, northern Bolivia, southern Colombia and especially eastern Peru. It is an arboreal species that can leap up to five metres between trees. They generally stay less than five metres above the forest floor, although they can climb to gather fruit for food, making them one of the best climbers and jumpers among primates.

The Goeldi’s titi is a variety of primate that is characterised by developing great social communication through vocalisations and develops a very distinctive facial and body language. They often interact through long-distance cries that are effective at more than 100 metres, as well as ultrasonic sounds.
