We welcome a rescued kookaburra to our educational birds-of-prey demonstration.
hace 3 monthsAt Terra Natura Benidorm, we have recently welcomed Cuqui, a kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae), into our birds-of-prey demonstration after being rescued by our team. This species, native to Australia, was handed over by a family who could no longer provide the specialised care it required. With its arrival, the park strengthens its commitment to conservation, animal welfare, and environmental education.
Commonly known as the “king of laughter”, the kookaburra belongs to the same group as the kingfisher, with which it shares several physical and behavioural traits. It is easily recognised by its large head and strong bill, tools it uses to catch its prey with remarkable accuracy. Although its legs are small and not particularly suited for walking, its agility and distinctive vocalisation make it one of the most remarkable birds on the planet.
Its powerful, unmistakable call has travelled far beyond Australia’s forests: it has been featured in numerous films and television series to evoke jungle and tropical settings, turning its sound into an icon of the audiovisual world.
Since Cuqui’s arrival, the Terra Natura Benidorm care team has been working on adapting its diet and habitat, tailoring them to the species’ specific needs to ensure its wellbeing and responsible handling. Cuqui is now part of the ‘Animals in Action’ educational experience, where visitors can meet it up close and learn more about its story, its origins, and its fascinating abilities.
